There is no alarm when I test my Motion Detector.

Text applies specifically to:

•AT&T Wireless Motion Detector Model 8561

Principles also apply to:

•I.T.I. Wireless Motion Detector

•Linear Wireless Motion Detector

•Napco Wireless Motion Detector

The system itself has a 40 second exit delay timer.  The motion detectors are usually programmed as "delayed."  That means once you have armed the system, you must wait at least 40 seconds before you try to trip the alarm.  When you do wait until the exit time has expired, and then trip the motion detector, you will hear only a single beep every four seconds until the 40 second entrance time expires.  Then the full alarm will sound.  Or will it?

The Model 8561 Motion Detector also has a "battery saver" function in it.  When someone passes by, it sends a detection message to the Central Controller.  It does this regardless of whether the system is armed.  The Central Controller makes the decision whether or not to sound off, based on whether the system is armed or not. After the motion detector's transmitter sends this message, it takes a "nap" for 4-1/2 minutes.  (If it is enabled, the LED on the front of the unit will blink whenever there is activity, even though the transmitter may be napping.  We usually disable that LED to further conserve battery power.)  If, during that 4-1/2 minutes, no further activity occurs, the detector will report again the next time there is activity.  When there is constant activity at intervals under 4-1/2 minutes, the nap timer is repeatedly extended.  Therefore, to test the motion detector, you must arm the system and not only wait for the 40 second exit delay to expire, you must also vacate the area viewed  by the motion detector for more than 4-1/2 minutes.  Then, when you try to trip the motion detector, the entry warning beeps should begin as expected.
